The drive to Assumption was uneventful. Just a little rainy at times. Our conversation was mostly chit chat but I did use the fact that he was stuck in the car with me to my advantage and spent some time on more serious matters. A mom has to use what she can!
We found a parking spot near his dorm and helped him lug his stuff up to his 3rd floor room. We got to meet his roommate and his family, who all seemed very nice. Since his roommate's mom and sister were helping make his bed and organize his clothes, Mike "allowed" me to do the same.
It didn't take long to unpack and we took a walk to another building to take care of his parking permit, activate his student ID for his dining plan, and stop by the campus store. We took Mike out to lunch and then dropped him off at his dorm.
He was not leaving the car without a hug! I think I did a pretty good job holding it all together. The ride home was a little rough. Obviously he isn't moving away for good, but our family life has changed and will never really go back to the way it was before ever again. I thought of all the times I wish I had spent more time with him growing up...made each moment count more...because it all went by so fast.
Where did all those years go?!?
So, on the way home, Jay tried to make me feel better by stopping by the mall. Shopping is a nice drug for me! Kate and Luke need clothes for fall. I know this humidity feels like it will n.e.v.e.r. go away, but it will, and they have almost nothing that still fits from last year! I got a few things for Sarah and Ellie, too.
That made me feel a little better. Change is hard.
And tomorrow, Luke starts preschool. I'm not sure I'm up for that. I may need to put something strong in my coffee tomorrow to get through the morning! Heck, I may have to skip the coffee all together!
I think there must be some rule somewhere that says you cannot send your youngest son to preschool the day after you move your oldest son to college! If not...there should be!
As long as I don't think about it I will be ok! Letting go is just.not.fun!
